WRITE theatre is a series of unique, intensive courses for emerging theatre writers run by established playwrights, Rib Davis and Brian Woolland, at The Cockpit in association with Border Crossings Laboratory. We run them two or three times a year.
Dates for the Autumn 2019 course have yet to be confirmed with The Cockpit, but will be published on the Write Theatre website by the end of June 2019.
ABOUT WRITE Theatre
For all courses, the period between the first weekend and the second gives participants an opportunity to revise and develop their writing.
It is possible to enrol for either weekend or both.
The first weekend of every course is devoted to workshops, seminars and one-to-one tutorials. Professional actors will NOT be present.
For the second weekend, professional actors are present throughout. Every participant has an extract from their script workshopped and rehearsed. Participating writers are given a choice about how they wish to use the Sunday of the second weekend. Some writers choose to continue with workshopping their scripts, others opt for script-in-hand performances, to which friends can be invited on the Sunday afternoon.
We believe that the writing of plays is an organic process, not something that can be taught through the rigid application of rules or application of templates. And it is through this organic process that the writer finds his or her voice.
Our courses provide:
the stimulation of working amongst other aspiring writers
intensive tuition through individual tutorials
group seminars and workshops on generating material, effective dialogue, characterisation and structure
time to draft and time to discuss those drafts with the tutors and other writers
2 days of workshops with experienced professional actors, all of whom have worked regularly with the RSC, culminating in performance of short extracts from your own work
